Paperweight is a useful and functional addition for your desktop and elegant gift for any seashell lover. The size is around 4” in diameter. It has an attractive gift box 4.2” x 4.2”.

This colorful and intricate paper weight was handcrafted with love by me, Alla Baksanskaya. The shells included under glass are white colored wenteltrap shells, green emerald nerites, blue mussel shells. I name it “Beach” because to me this shell paperweight looks like a small version of the beach under crystal dome with turquoise water and tiny shells. The glass paperweight with magnifying glass measures 4″ in diameter and is under 1/8″ thick glass. The more intricate the design, the longer that it takes to create. The mosaic has three dimentional looking or depth because includes the several layers. These are not made with a hot glue gun. Some shells also cost lots more than others.

In a many beautiful carnival masks were used feathers. Feathers are an ancient African symbol of our abilities as humans to rise above our problems, sickness, pain and heartache, and represent the ability to travel to another realm of spirituality. The Caribbean carnival masks reveal a rich blend of cultures, festivals and symbolism that make them unique in the world.

For story and dance rituals, the Northwest Coast Indians carved detailed double masks of cedar. These masks opened at a place in the story to reveal a second face carved inside the first, representing a shadow ego or change in qualities of the character.
The Eskimo people believed that every living creature had a double existence and could change from animal to human being and back at will, so their masks had two faces, one of the animal spirit and one of the human.

This may be a reason for the revival of the Life Mask offered in healing spas and holistic centers as a “personal journey into discovery…” We all have a “public face,” sometimes enhanced by a well-tailored suit, sunglasses or jewelry that we feel reflects our character. We all believe we know what we look like to others, but unless we have a twin, most likely we’ve only seen ourselves in a mirror or in a photograph. Life masks offer an incredibly detailed portrait. The details of our faces are a map created over the years, showing our history, genealogy, life’s sorrows and happiness. Unlike a photograph or sculpture, a life mask captures the likeness down to the finest lines and texture of the skin. For decorative purposes (not for wearing), these masks can be created in plaster or bronze and be passed down through generations as a piece of family history, as a beautiful artifact of our ancestral past.

For many centuries, masks have been a part of Venetian culture and history. From the
beginnings of the Venetian Republic to Carnival (known as Mardi Gras parade), to theater and art, Venetian masks have played a mystical, enchanting part in  Italian history.
I like to create a decorative nautical masks for the wall interior design. It’s a chance to preserve some of the ocean treasures, which were collected on the shore during a romantic vacation, an attractive presentation way to keep and demonstrate personal collection for the friends and customers.
For the mask’s bases can be used many different materials: unique pieces of wood known as Acacia, native to the Philippine islands, hard backboards, cork, even stone. I prefer to use a combination from a several natural materials like semi precious stones, driftwood, shells, sea stars and pieces of the corals and pearls.
It is a very interesting way to show the natural beautiful colors from an exotics journey. Masks can become an unique conversational pieces and great an unusual gifts for any occasions.

Ocean Spirit. Decoration collectible seashell wall nautical mask. 10″ X 11″

Deep shells like razor clams, oysters, blue mussel shells are the great natural and texture materials for your project.
Materials: Seashells ( 4 oyster shells or two matching or symmetrical pairs, 1 half from razor clam shell and two half,broken, long pieces from blue mussel shells.)
Any shape and size picture frame with back board, in my case I used 5”x 7” frame;
acrylic paint - Light Green and Orange color ;
paint brush;
Multipurpose Elmer’s glue;
Black Marker;
Paper towel

Just follow 5 simple steps:
1) Clean the shells in solution of bleach with water and dry them after.
2) Try to put all your shells for project on the frame and arrange them as a butterfly. If you like the result you can begin to paint. Your shells are originally dull and colorless except blue mussel shells. Create desirable tones that match to your shells color or contrast them.
3) I chose Orange color, acrylic paint for butterfly wings and body. You can choose any desirable tones that in good contrast with your backboard and frame. Let it dry for 20 minutes.

4) Color your frame backboard in green color. Leave your frame to dry for 30 minutes.

5) With a Black color Marker you can make any design on your butterfly’s wings.
6) Your last step is to glue all parts from your project. Try to be careful with an extra glue amount. Clean your working place with a paper towel. The first it will be better to glue the body, then can be the wings and last you can add antennas.
If you prefer to work with the natural colored seashells, all expenses for project can be higher but you can finish in two steps.

Class 71. Single Miniature Sailor’s Valentine “ Splashing 75 Shellabration with the year of the Dragon 2012”, 6” in size.
The work was previously painted with acrylic paints. Each detail were made out and shaped from the shells. Dragon gave a big hug to Sanibel, which looks like a friendly dolphin.
Sanibel made out from the tiny red snail shells from the Philippines and surrounding with waves made out from Baby Abalone shells. For the Dragon’s body were used the tiny clam shells with vintage dyed green and yellow colors and Dentalium Weinkauffi shells with dyed yellow color. Also for the decoration purpose were used Lilac shells dyed peach color, vintage seeds, crushed Japanese Tellin and natural color Baby Clam shells. Tiny clam shells were personally collected by the artist after the storm in the NY beach.

Class 84. “Santa” holiday music clock decoration

Winter holiday decoration Seashell and semiprecious wall and table clock which plays one of Twelve Carols on the each hour. This clock has a special light sensor and never play carols in the dark room at night. The work was previously painted with acrylic paints. Seashell mosaic made out from Jingle white Pearl seashells which were collected in Sanibel, green Nerite Snail shells, Gar fish scales vintage dyed green and blue, crab Eye seeds Rosary Peas and also different kind of semiprecious stones and their fragments. The face of Santa and Teddy Bear were decorated with crushed Japanese Tellin seashells.
This winter holiday decoration remind unforgettable vacation on the shore, great time on the beach with close friend and Christmas.

Class 86. Novelties. Caricature “Life has two faces”

Figurine includes the three fish, one made into the inside another one. Two fish the bigger in size were made out from wood, the smaller fish made from Orange Jingle seashells, Mussel shells with natural blue color, oyster shells and moon snail shells. These shells were collected in Sanibel from the last year. Also each wood fish has a special natural cork covering on the bottom with sea urchin spines inside it. Spines in my work mean all the problems in our life.

Class 89. Miscellaneous. “Ganesha” seashell wall clock.

Modern design seashell watch clock “Ganesha”. The melting design for this clock reminds Salvador Dali paintings. This work was made after an exotic and inspirational trip to India, 2010.

Tiny and delicate miniature seashell mosaic. Lord Ganesha is a symbol of wisdom, wealth, success and good luck in Hinduism.
The work was previously painted inside the clock.

In this work were used seashells from old collection for Sailor Valentines: Mother of Pearl crushed seashell chips, apple blossom shells, lilac shells dyed pink vintage, tiny Mussel natural blue shells for the numbers, Lucine Cup shells vintage dyed purple, Dwarf Olive shells, tiny Nassa seashells, Gar fish Natural Ivory scales for Lord Ganesha eyes and one Dentalium Weinkauffi shell for the elephant task.

Class 91 Picture seashell mosaic “ King Neptune greeting for 75 Anniversary”

This work were made in a special antique wall clock shadow box. His age almost the same like age of the show.
The work was previously painted with an acrylic paints. Each element of the mosaic was made from the shells or nautical life.
The King of Neptune and his six horses were painted and carved from the Jingle seashells golden, orange, white and gray colors. For decorative purpose were used: Mussel shells “micro” Natural blue color,GENUINE RARE HAWAIIAN SEA SHELLS OPIHI CELLANA EXARATA
Gar fish scales for eyes.
For ocean waves in the mosaic used tiny green Nerite Snail shells, Dentalium Weinkauffi vintage dyed green shells and also crushed Spirula and Jingle white shells with a tiny Baby clam shells.
In the center of the mosaic the Neptune driving a Sea Chariot, which is Tridacna seashell and Junonia seashell with Allapora Pink corals like a present for the Sanibel Jubilee.
The beautiful sunny island Sanibel made out from the Jingle seashells orange color and looks like the happy dolphin. The dolphin’s eye is the seashell Museum on the island, and on the nose is the Harbour Lighthouse. Complicated dolphin’s eye made out of two parts: Gar fish scale and tiny Mussel ”micro” Natural blue shell.

Class 96. Celebrating “75” Years using 75 shells only.
This work received Third Place, White ribbon award on the show.

1. Beautiful woman on the Sanibel beach. An acrylic painting miniature painting with using 4 shells on it. Hat was decorated with 2 pieces from one shell. The woman’s body decorated with crushed onyx.
2. Stork an acrylic painting with using 12 Job’s tears natural color shells.
3. Sanibel with the Harbour Lighthouse.
An acrylic miniature painting using 13 tiny green Operculum from Philippines and 1 crushed tiny red snail shell for the Lighthouse.
4. Spoonbill bird The Roseate Spoonbill is one of the most strange but beautiful looking birds you’ll see in Sanibel.
It is an acrylic painting with using 20 Job’s tears vintage dyed pink shells and 10 tiny green Operculum from Philippines for the nest.
5. Dolphin with a white sail.
An acrilyc painting with using 4 shells. On the dolphin’s body there are 6 tiny pieces from 1 Jingle shell. One tiny shell for dolphin’s eye and 2 shells for sail.
6. Raccoon with the most desirable shell award in Sanibel -Junonia seashell.
An acrylic painting with using 11 seashells: 6 shells for raccoon’s eyes, one Mussel shell for the nose, one shell fragment for Junonia seashell, 3 Mussel shells for Raccoon’s tail.
All together I used 75 shells.

• Seashell flute tutorial and beautiful unique music lessons by Michael Ryan in our days.
• Seashellmusic.com, an online music store introducing a new and unique line of seashell wind instruments. These instruments were discovered and developed by company founder, Michael Ryan.
• Clean and empty shells can be made into beautiful sounding and looking musical instruments such as twelve note spiral flutes, five note large owl call spiral hoots, two note spiral loon calls, two note small owl call spiral hoots and bird of prey and dolphin call whistle necklaces.
• Ryan’s fourteen year old nephew, Jonathan, taught him how to whistle with an acorn cap in the woods of western Pennsylvania during the early autumn of 2002. It’s an ancient and somewhat obscure nature skill. No one knows who first discovered the skill but it’s been passed from person to person, down through the ages.

 
During vacationing in Florida Michael applied the skill to a small clam shell because he wanted to get the attention of two wild dolphins playing in the surf. The dolphins whistled back and came in closer. They whistled back and forth for a few minutes. Back home on Cape Cod Ryan played different shells at various times of the day and night. Great Horned Owls answered the hooting sounds the Muffin Shell (Rysotta Ovum) produced. Mourning Doves flew towards the cooing sounds of the Screw Shell (Terebra Turritella). Loons responded with laugh-like cries to the Golden Mouth Turban Shell. Osprey listened attentively to the sounds made with small clam, limpet and periwinkle shells.
Michael wanted to imitate these animal songs more closely, just for the fun of it, and thought the hollow spiral tubes of the various snail shells ought to behave like flutes if pitch holes were drilled into the shells. He bought a Dremel Drill (high speed rotary drill). Shells are just too hard to drill into using conventional drills and bits.
Ryan used the Terebra Turritella Shell, commonly known by the names Tower Shell, Turret Shell, Unicorn Shell, Auger Shell, Screw Shell, Common Screw Shell and Great Screw Shell because they released an octave and a half of perfect musical notes (the diatonic and chromatic musical scales) by simply drilling five pitch holes following the lengthwise axis line of the shell into whorls 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8. Seashell spiral flutes behave a bit differently than manufactured straight bore flutes, whistle flutes, ocarinas, pan pipes and the like. First of all the tube is a conical helix spiral. That makes the notes lilt and melt into one another. Perhaps that’s why there are at least twelve clear notes available (and maybe more) using only five finger pitch holes. Mother Nature worked it all out millions of years ago. That’s how long the shape of this shell has remained the same, according to Dr. Gary Rosenberg, a Malacologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, PA.
The Muffin Shell or Cinnamon Bun Shell (Rysotta Ovum) released at least five perfect musical notes (Do, Re, Mi, Fa and Sol) by drilling four pitch holes following X/Y axis lines centered on the shell apex (spiral point or beginning). Pitch hole placement is determined by where the finger tips naturally touch the shell while using the acorn cap whistle technique to resonate the air inside the shell. These ‘touch points’ connect into simple geometric lines. These lines of pitch holes interact with various seashell spirals to release musical scales. Physicists at Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida have been studying why this is so for over four years now without conclusive answers.
The remaining shells in Ryan’s line of seashell musical instruments are not as mysterious or complex. They are more suitable for children six years old and older to play.

The Golden Mouth Turban Shell imitates Loon calls. It has one pitch hole and is easy to operate, with practice. The small owl hoot, made with one pitch hole from either a Whale Eye Shell or Japanese Land Snail Shell is also easy to operate, with practice. The simple clam, limpet and periwinkle adjustable whistle necklaces are the easiest of all to operate, with practice, as they don’t contain any pitch holes. They are just really loud, high pitched whistles, like seashell pasta whistles or acorn cap whistles. They look like a beautiful seashell necklace until you want or need to use them. Then they can make your earrings.
All of the shells Ryan use to make these musical wind instruments are non-endangered, non-threatened, hand collected and very common species. The Terebra Turritella and Rysotta Ovum shells are from the Philippines. The clam shells are fossilized and are from Florida beaches. The limpet shells come from Ireland. The periwinkle shells come from Cape Cod, MA and Florida. The Turban shells come from India. The Japanese Land Snail shells come from Japan.

These beautiful lines belong to the great poet Alexander Pushkin. The same words were used in the name for the new art exhibition which were opened on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Library Kings Highway Gallery, at 2115 Ocean Ave, from 2-4 P.M. At the first glance it was a traditional presentation organized by the Guild of Jewish artists, but the unusual and unexpected impressions started from the beginning…
Alla Baksanskaya and Oleg Georgievskiy provided their new, amazing and diverse art works to all guests. In the life as in the art is rarely possible the same understanding and agreement of taste and interests, as well as the same ways of expression of a completely different creative people. Both exhibitors are working with natural materials in a modern style. Their creative views coincide even on the subjects. According to the authors, next on the wall side by side located two charming hells, one is masterfully carved from wood and belonged to Oleg, and another is the gambling-tempter, made from the shells and starfish by Alla.

This is not the only one coincidence in the hall. There are also two of Bacchus, two visions of the god of wine and fertility. One of them was a wood carving work created by Oleg and another made from the ocean seashells on the bamboo plate by Alla.There is a great and extraordinary impact on the both of the artists by Salvador Dali. Oleg had the unique graphic work and Alla made a melting wall clock with the seashell and pearl micro mosaic.
Oleg Georgievskiy is a gifted poet, writer, graphic designer and sculptor, who spent 20 years of his life in aviation. The talents of the sculptor and woodcarver , Oleg inherited from his father.
The tense and stressful daily work caused a need for another self-expression, the possibility of stress management through the arts.
If a person is talented, he is talented usually in everything… Each work from the Oleg’s collection is a real masterpiece and has many details, the graphic works have a huge sense of humor. Audience met with a loud applause the poems which Oleg read during the event.
Alla Baksanskaya worked as pediatric doctor. She liked to draw, write poems, epigrams, played piano. The main purpose of her work is the creation of unique works from natural materials especially seashells that produce positive emotions in our lives with full of stress. She believes that using shells in art works can be modern and fashionably looking, also bring new ideas in our interior design.
At the exhibition, she demonstrated a very different decoration art works.
The amazing collection of wall clocks with the mosaics made from a tiny ocean shells and Mother of Pearl, unusual and abstract metal vase with seashell decoration and sunflowers with seashell mosaics.






Alla surprised all guests with a snow-white Christmas tree with toys which made or decorated with the shells. It can be absolutely a new nautical suggestion for celebration Year 2012.
Audience with a great interest took a careful sight on the new mixed media seashell mosaics: “Fish”, “Mermaid”, “Spanish dancer”. Some of the works have a funny rhymes. For example, work “Fish”

Alla likes to experiment with her art works and brought the miniature works: Christmas Banzai Tree, Funny Christmas tree from the pine cone and tiny seashell decorations, Seashell Greeting Christmas cards and many other unique things….She tell the guests about a very interesting personal experience with the workshops which she had with the kids in the library and about articles which she wrote in the Parent’s magazine during the year. Also Alla helped organize a special kid’s exhibition and write an article about this event in the newspaper. The presentation came in a special and warm atmosphere. The honorary member of the Jewish Guild Isaak Vainshilboum, summarizing and concluding the event said:”I am surprised with imagination and talent. It is a very rare, harmonious and unique show!Nothing falls out of a slim number of perceptions…”
The exhibition can be seen until December 17, 2011. The best opportunity to form your opinion is to visit the showroom personally.

I like to use natural cork, small pieces of the natural stones, corals, pearls, wood frames for decoration my wall clocks. My art works created from the shells with natural color without any paints. All designs are unique, different and unusual the same time. This present or gift for holidays can be match for any room decor. All clock designs can’t be repeated in exactly the same way because you never can find the same shells in nature….

The Jewish Folk Crafts Guild with the Kings Hwy Branch of Brooklyn Public Library organized the series of the experimental free educational workshops. The goal of the workshops is to introduce, popularize and develop the applied creativity for kids.
Each kid, who participated in this workshop had a chance to make by its own “Halloween Picture Frame decorated with seashells” and took it home as a souvenir.
The workshop had a great success and nobody was afraid of a snow storm in October that happens to be that day. Kids with their parents and workers from the library were happy to participate in this new and very useful event and demonstrated great interest.
Artist Alla Baksanskaya wrote in workshop’s advertisement about age of the participants from 8 to 12 years old. But she was surprised because the best and fastest young artist was 3 years old and even adult parents and teenagers were happy to participated. All 10 kids, teenagers and adults worked very friendly and cooperative with each other. After the workshop was finished the guests, participants and their parents enjoyed seashell art exhibition on the wall. They had many questions about those unique and natural material and unusual art. Also they never saw so many and different kind of art made from leather, glass, painting at the same place together in public library.
It was a very interesting and exiting experience for all. Some kids leave a very emotional comments and testimonials after:
“ I love it. I can’t wait to do it again. There should be much more workshops in other libraries. It was so much fun. I love every other piece of art work on the wall. Every single thing was shells. I love this library…”
